Jazz in Barbados October 18 – October 24, 2013

“The people who know nothing about music are the ones always talking about it.” Nathaniel Adams Coles, known professionally as Nat King Cole. An American jazz vocalist, Cole first came to prominence as a leading jazz pianist when he formed the Nat King Cole Trio. But most will remember him as a vocalist with a distinctively soft, baritone voice. Cole was one of the first African-Americans to host a television variety show.

August 30, 2013 BJS rebrands with a new logo

The Barbados Jazz Society has a new logo and website banner designed by Phillip Kellman, a student in Graphic Arts at Barbados Community College. BJS is grateful to Phillip for his creative energies and new awareness of jazz music that is reflected in our new design.

We asked Phillip to tell us about his work . . .

“My name is Phillip Kellman and I am 21 years of age. I am highly involved in, art and music. On many occasions I find myself either sketching and developing some new product or listening to music. I have always been in love with the arts. From the visual arts to the performing arts. I am an entrepreneur and am in the process of developing my own graphic design company called “Live Studios”. I love to see people strive for greater and I am eager to teach and help wherever I can. I love to challenge myself and push for excellence. When ever I encounter a problem in life I refer to the words of a bible passage, taken from Philippians 4:13 which states, “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.”

Jazz in Barbados August 16 – 22, 2013

“It’s the group sound that’s important, even when you’re playing a solo. You not only have to know your own instrument, you must know the others and how to back them up at all times. That’s Jazz.” Oscar Peterson, Canadian Jazz pianist & composer, considered to have been one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time. Peterson’s career spanned 60 years during which time he made 200 recordings and won 8 Grammy Awards.
