January 26, 2013 ‘One Night Only’ with saxophonist Andre Woodvine and The Original Unit

‘One Night Only’ was the perfect theme for this magical evening with saxophonist Andre Woodvine. Backed by The Original Unit, Woodvine took jazz patrons into new musical territory with his original compositions — in true Woodvine style, each tune had its own narrative.

December 2012 – Jazz on the Mound at Barbados Community College

“When you are studying Jazz best thing to do is listen to records & live music as much you can & absorb everything.” Carla Bley – jazz pianist & composer

Monday December 10th, BJS members were at Music on the Mound, a full day of great music performed by students of at Barbados Community College Music Department. The jazz segment was brilliant. Ensembles (small big

Andre Woodvine combo

bands) and combos (quintets & sextets) entertained the enthusiastic jazz audience with the music of Coltrane, Nicholas Payton, jazz pianist Adrian Clarke, Mongo Santamaria, and others. The learning curve with each performance was amazing to watch; one could just imagine how much each musician will improve as they gain more confidence and exposure.

BCC Performance Hall David Carnegie Combo

The Mound is the grassy area outside the Performance Hall where there wascovered seating for the audience. The boys from St. Leonard’s Secondary School kept the audience well supplied with hotdogs, hamburgers, and delicious mauby, the proceeds of which will help to offset production costs.

The BJS applauds Music Department Director, Roger Gittens and tutors Stefan van den Bossche, Andre Woodvine, and David Carnegie for their dedication to keeping jazz alive in Barbados.

July 2012 – Barbados Jazz Society raises funds for the Barbados Community College Music Department

One of the mandates of the Barbados Jazz Society is the support of up and coming young Jazz musicians through the music program at the Barbados Community College.

The first fundraiser was held in July at the Member’s Mingle at the home of President Anne Smith where a trio of BCC-trained musicians entertained over 40 members and guests. Saxophonist Mylon Clarke, guitarist Darren Massiah, and bassist Lorin Brathwaite offered an interesting mix of old standards like Ellington’s “Take the A Train”  and Coltrane’s “Impressions” along with Caribbean renditions of newer pieces such as “Blue Bossa” and “C-Jam Blues”. The  highlight was an original composition by the guitarist Mylon Clarke entitled “Polka Dot Panties”.

Members gave generously toward the instruments fund and the presentation to the BCC was made on the spot. The evening ended with a rousing Jazz Jeopardy Quiz put together by BJS Executive members Cheryl Bertrand and Barry Taylor, with two teams showing off their Jazz knowledge.

The BJS will be holding more such evenings to add to the student instruments fund.

February 19, 2012 – Barbados Jazz Society presents the Mike Sealy Group with Canadian Jazz Pianist Steve Koven

Bassist Cecil Bascombe and drummer Vere Gibson set a steady groove for Mike and Steve. The Barbados Jazz Society thanks  patrons and partner Divi Southwinds for their support.
