Jazz at Koningsdag

A Tribute to Herbie Hancock

MICHAEL BORSTLAP
AND FRIENDS KONINGSDAG
JAZZ CONCERT

On Monday, May 5th, the grounds of Sweetfield Manor lit up in celebration of Koningsdag — the Netherlands’ annual King’s Day — reimagined through the soulful lens of jazz. In a unique cultural partnership between the Barbados Jazz Society and the Kingdom of the Netherlands, under the patronage of His Excellency Ambassador Cor Herschbach, the event was a tribute to the one and only Herbie Hancock.

The evening opened with a vibrant set from Barbados’ own Jomo Slusher & Friends, setting the tone with homegrown soul and groove. The headline act, Dutch jazz pianist Michiel Borstlap, delivered a spellbinding tribute to Hancock’s legacy, accompanied by the dynamic rhythm of Hershel Rosario on drums and Marlon Conrads on bass. Together, they took the audience on a transcendent musical journey — bridging continents, cultures, and generations through sound.

Guests were treated not only to world-class performances but to an atmosphere rich in elegance and camaraderie. From Dutch-themed cocktails and Caribbean charm to unforgettable melodies, Koningsdag 2025 was a heartfelt celebration of international friendship and musical brilliance.
